Madonna Confirmed to Open the 2026 VMAs

MTV announced on September 16 that Madonna will open the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, her first live performance at the show in 23 years. The news broke via Deadline, confirming what had been rumored since nominations were announced in August.

The 2026 VMAs air live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, starting at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT. The show broadcasts on CBS, simulcasts on MTV, and streams on Paramount+.

Snoop Dogg Hosts as the Show Returns to the West Coast

Snoop Dogg is hosting the 2026 VMAs, and the ceremony’s move to the Peacock Theater marks the first time the show has been held on the West Coast since 2017. Snoop is a 13-time VMA nominee with 3 wins of his own, so this isn’t his first time on that stage.

Her Last VMA Performance Was 23 Years Ago

Madonna’s VMA history goes back to the very beginning of the award show itself. She opened the first-ever MTV Video Music Awards in 1984, performing “Like a Virgin” in a wedding gown and descending from a giant wedding cake. One of her shoes came off mid-routine; she worked it into the choreography rather than stopping.

Her most recent VMA performance, in 2003 at Radio City Music Hall, is still one of the most replayed moments in the show’s history. Britney Spears opened that segment with a “Like a Virgin” tribute to Madonna’s own 1984 performance, Christina Aguilera joined in, and Madonna then emerged from another wedding cake dressed as a groom in a black top hat. She kissed Spears, then Aguilera, on stage; MTV’s broadcast cut away from the second kiss to audience reaction shots of Justin Timberlake, Eminem and 50 Cent. That was 23 years ago. This year’s Madonna VMA return puts her back on the VMA stage 23 years after that performance, and 42 years after the wedding-cake debut that started it all in 1984. It will also mark the fourth time she’s held the VMAs’ opening slot specifically, after 1984, 1990 and 2003.

Madonna VMA Return by the Numbers: 11 Nominations, Leading the Field

The Madonna VMA return isn’t limited to the opening slot. She enters the night with a career-high 11 nominations, the most of any artist this year, according to Billboard’s full nominations list. Taylor Swift is second with 9.

Most of Madonna’s nominations belong to Confessions II – The Film, which is up for Video of the Year, Best Dance, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Choreography, Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects. She’s also nominated for Artist of the Year, and for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration for “Bring Your Love,” her duet with Sabrina Carpenter.

“Bring Your Love” has had a real chart run on its own. It debuted at No. 74 on the Billboard Hot 100, Madonna’s highest debut on that chart since 2012, and hit No. 1 on the UK Airplay chart. It also became the first Madonna song in 18 years added to BBC Radio 1’s A-List playlist.

She’s up against real competition in the night’s two biggest categories. Video of the Year nominees also include Ariana Grande (“Hate That I Made You Love Me”), Bruno Mars (“I Just Might”), Gener8ion featuring Yung Lean (“Storm”), Sabrina Carpenter (“Tears”) and Taylor Swift (“The Fate of Ophelia”). There’s a second storyline buried in that same field: if Taylor Swift wins even one award on September 27, she becomes the most-awarded artist in VMA history, tying Beyoncé’s record of 30 career wins. The 2026 VMAs span 20 award categories in total.

Nirvana Joins the Night with the Video Vanguard Award

Madonna isn’t the only legacy act getting a spotlight moment this year. MTV announced on September 9 that Nirvana will receive the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 ceremony, timed to the 34th anniversary of the band’s instrument-smashing 1992 VMA performance.

Nirvana is the first band to receive the Vanguard Award since Duran Duran in 2003, the same year Madonna last performed live at the VMAs. MTV hasn’t said which surviving member of the band will accept. The band hasn’t performed together since Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994, and surviving members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have occasionally reunited for one-off tributes since.

Why TikTok Spent 2026 Rediscovering Madonna

The Madonna VMA return isn’t happening in a vacuum. It comes months after TikTok gave her one of the biggest artist moments the platform has ever run.

The occasion was Confessions II, Madonna’s 15th studio album, released July 3 on Warner Records. The 16-track record features Sabrina Carpenter on “Bring Your Love,” Feid on “Read My Lips,” Martin Garrix on “Bizarre,” Stromae on “My Sins Are My Savior,” and her daughter Lourdes “Lola” Leon on “The Test.” It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 134,000 equivalent album units in its first week, 114,000 of them pure sales, making it Madonna’s 10th chart-topping album on the Billboard 200 and her first chart-topper of the decade.

TikTok built a dedicated, multi-part global campaign around the release, branded “TikTok Celebrates Madonna’s Confessions II,” spanning a TikTok LIVE premiere, an in-app experience and pop-up activations tied to the album.

The campaign went beyond the app itself. TikTok and Madonna’s team opened physical “House of Confessions” pop-ups in New York (188 Lafayette) and London (The Vinyl Factory) on July 3-4, offering album-inspired visuals, a limited-edition TikTok vinyl variant, listening sessions and content-creation setups built around the record. Inside the app, a dedicated Confessions II hub added interactive tasks, fan rewards and profile frames tied to the rollout.

The centerpiece was the “iHeartRadio and TikTok LIVE Premiere with Madonna” on July 2, part listening party and part fan Q&A, hosted by Bob the Drag Queen with appearances from producer Stuart Price and Lola Leon. It drew more than 2.1 million viewers worldwide, which TikTok’s own Newsroom says is the biggest standalone artist broadcast the platform has ever run. The stream pulled in more than 5.75 million likes and over 139,000 comments, and simulcast across more than 200 iHeartRadio stations nationwide.
