TikTok For You Feed: How TikTok Says Its Recommendation System Works (2026)
The TikTok For You feed is where, in TikTok’s words, “you can discover new interests and hobbies, and where creators build thriving new communities.” TikTok’s Creator Academy says it is powered by a recommendation system “that helps connect you to content, other creators, and topics you might enjoy.”
This guide reports what TikTok says about how the TikTok For You feed works. It draws on TikTok’s own introduction to the TikTok recommendation system, three Creator Academy pages (Understanding the Recommendation System, Why is your video not getting recommended on the For You feed? and Driving video traffic: The For You feed), and a TikTok Newsroom post about refreshing the feed. The first four were read on October 21, 2026; the Newsroom post carries a March 2023 date. TikTok changes these systems and pages, so everything below is TikTok’s own description at the time of reading. This site adds no advice and no analysis.

What the TikTok For You Feed Is
TikTok’s transparency page on the TikTok For You feed says more than one billion people around the world come to TikTok every month “to create, discover and share,” and that the recommendation system “powers the For You feed, a core part of the TikTok experience.” Its Creator Academy page adds: “The For You feed (FYF) is what makes TikTok unique, delivering all kinds of high-quality content tailored to your specific interests.”
TikTok gives an example of how the TikTok For You feed is tailored: “if you’re glued to those videos of stand-up comedians working the crowd until the very end, your FYF will get filled with more stand-ups working the crowd. Or when you swipe past an ASMR video without a thought, the less ASMR content you’ll get on your feed.”

The Criteria TikTok Says Guide the For You Feed
TikTok’s transparency page says it aims to build the system behind the TikTok For You feed in line with these fundamental criteria:
- Providing a safe experience for a broad audience, and in particular teens.
- Respecting local contexts and cultural norms.
- Maintaining content neutrality: “the recommendation system is designed to be inclusive of all communities and impartial to the content it recommends.”
- Championing opportunities for original and creative expression.
- Enabling new content exploration by promoting a variety of content and topics.
The Steps Behind the TikTok For You Feed
TikTok says the system is “made up of different machine learning models” and goes through steps that “can be broadly summarized” as follows. These are TikTok’s descriptions.
- Understanding your preferences: TikTok says the system starts “by reviewing videos you’ve recently watched, finished, liked, skipped, commented on, or saved to find out what you might want to see next.”
- Selecting videos for recommendation: the system “retrieves a large number of videos that have passed our initial content moderation processes and is eligible for recommendation to the For You feed,” and, per the Creator Academy page, takes into account the viewer’s location and the region in which a video was posted.
- Prediction: “Predictions estimate the likelihood you will interact with a given video; for example, the probability of liking, sharing, commenting, or skipping.” Combining those scores gives an overall score for each video, “with higher scores signifying a closer match to your preferences.”
- Ranking: videos are sorted by prediction score, from high to low. TikTok says the feed is created from these top-ranked videos, “provided they pass a final similarity check.”
- Similarity check: TikTok says “content similarity measures how different consecutive videos in your For You feed are.” If top-ranked videos are too similar, for example “they use the same sound,” TikTok says it replaces them with others “to ensure a greater variety.”
- Recommendation rules: extra rules applied at different points. TikTok gives two examples: videos in the feed include content from creators in the viewer’s region, and content created by accounts aged under 16 is ineligible for recommendation.
TikTok For You Feed Signals That TikTok Lists
TikTok calls its list of TikTok For You feed signals “non-exhaustive” and says the signals “are dynamic and constantly updated.” It lists these factors for personalizing a viewer’s feed:
- Region, “aligning recommendations to local standards and cultural norms.”
- The language the device is set to.
- The device’s operating system.
- Videos the viewer recently interacted with, including those watched, finished, liked or skipped.
- Follow relationships with other people on TikTok.
TikTok says it also takes into account how others interact with content: “if another user has engaged with two of the same videos that you have interacted with, the system may predict that you are likely to also engage with a third video that this user has interacted with.”
The interactions TikTok says the system predicts
- Like, share, comment on, or mark a video as “Not Interested.”
- Follow the video’s author or interact with their profile.
- Finish, skip, or favorite a video.
- Spend a certain amount of time viewing a video.
- Tap the video’s soundtrack.
The signals about the video itself
- The time the video was posted.
- The region the video was posted from.
- The language setting of the video’s author.
- The hashtags associated with the video.
Content Ineligible for the TikTok For You Feed, per TikTok
TikTok’s transparency page says that when a video is first uploaded it goes through content moderation, a combination of automated systems and moderation teams. Per TikTok, “content that violates our Community Guidelines is removed, and content that is not suitable for a broad audience is made ineligible for recommendation,” and “only videos that pass moderation are included in the pool of videos that can be recommended.”
TikTok’s Creator Academy page on why a video might not be recommended says the For You feed “is intended for a range of audiences that includes everyone from teenagers to great-grandparents,” and gives these examples of content that may be ineligible:
- Unoriginal content: “if content feels recycled, spammy, or just not quite right for TikTok,” including “videos borrowed from other places without a fresh spin or twist.”
- Shocking and graphic content: TikTok says it might also add a notification on videos that “could be a bit much, giving viewers the choice to watch or not.”
- Mature content: content “that’s not quite age-appropriate or discusses adult topics.” TikTok adds that “content from creators under 16 will not be eligible for recommendation to people they don’t know.”
- Dangerous activity or challenges: TikTok says it is careful not to suggest videos “that might encourage risky behavior or challenges that could put our users in a dangerous situation.”
On teens, TikTok’s transparency page says overtly mature content is “not available anywhere on TikTok for accounts aged 13-17, and only viewable by adults 18 years and older.”
TikTok also describes limiting repetition in the TikTok For You feed. Its Creator Academy page says it aims “to prevent our systems from repeatedly recommending content that could lead to a negative experience, such as extreme fitness or dieting, sexual suggestiveness, sadness, or overgeneralized mental health advice,” and that “during moments of crisis or unrest,” it may “interrupt repetitive recommendations.” A TikTok Newsroom post dated March 16, 2023 says viewers “will generally not be served two videos in a row made by the same creator or that use the same sound.”
TikTok says that if content is made ineligible for the For You feed or otherwise restricted, “this information will appear in the TikTok analytics tool.” It points to the “For You feed ineligible” sections of its Community Guidelines for the details.
TikTok For You Feed Tools for Viewers
- Not interested: long-press a video in the feed and select “Not interested.” TikTok says this “will let us know you’re not interested in that type of content and we will limit how much of that content we recommend in your feed.”
- Video keyword filters: add keywords, words or hashtags, to filter from the feed.
- Feed refresh: TikTok’s March 2023 Newsroom post describes a way to refresh the feed if recommendations no longer feel relevant. It says that, when enabled, the feature “allows someone to view content on their For You feed as if they just signed up for TikTok,” after which the system “will then begin to surface more content based on new interactions.” The post says refresh “won’t override any settings you’ve already chosen to enable or impact accounts you’ve followed.”
