Legal & Policy Watch: TikTok Weekly Digest
Missouri Opens an Investigation Into TikTok
The first item in this TikTok weekly digest: on October 14, 2026, Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway announced a formal investigation into whether TikTok has “deceived families, exploited young users, or put children at risk through its platform’s design and operation,” according to her office’s press release. The office issued a Civil Investigative Demand that asks how TikTok’s algorithm selects and promotes content for children, how it determines users’ ages, what safeguards it applies and whether it enforces them, and for internal research on how children use the app.
Under Missouri law, per the attorney general, TikTok must respond by November 13, 2026. The release announces no finding, and the sources read for this site’s write-up report no TikTok response. Full breakdown: Missouri TikTok Investigation.
The Screentime to Cash Pop-Up
A pop-up telling TikTok users they were “selected” for a Screentime to Cash program and asking them to confirm their age is not a TikTok program, TikTok told LADbible on October 15. The Tab reported the same day that TikTok has no program that pays people for scrolling, and quoted a TikTok statement that it has “removed content and accounts for violating our policies against deceptive practices and misleading content.” Both outlets report that users who enter a birthday are sent to an app store page, which for many appears to be Playful Rewards, whose spokesperson said the ads are not run directly by the app. See Screentime to Cash Pop-Up on TikTok.
