This week’s TikTok weekly highlights ran from a TikTok Shop checkout announcement to a book that flopped in 2011 and is back in print because of a TikTok wave. Between October 5 and October 11, 2026, TikTok news covered a new in-app checkout, a UK safety test that every energy-saving device failed, a Halloween travel guide, a first headline tour and a vegetable that people have strong opinions about.
Below are the TikTok weekly highlights, grouped the way every edition of this column is: safety and consumer watch, big news, trending, a creator tools roundup, one video worth watching, one person worth knowing, quick hits and what to watch next. Each story links to its full breakdown on this site.
The week in one line: TikTok spent the week pushing shopping and creator tools, while the stories people actually clicked were about a book, a tour, some dogs and a zucchini.
Safety & Consumer Watch: TikTok Weekly Highlights
Every Energy-Saving Device Failed
The consumer-safety story among this week’s TikTok weekly highlights comes from the UK. A charity, Electrical Safety First, tested 13 “energy-saving devices” bought from marketplaces including TikTok Shop, Amazon Marketplace and AliExpress, and all 13 failed. Two effectively exploded in a short circuit test, per the charity.
TikTok, Amazon and AliExpress each said they removed the products. The source does not say how many of the 13 came from TikTok Shop specifically, and this site’s write-up keeps that distinction. Full detail: Energy-Saving Devices on TikTok Shop Failed Every Safety Test.

Two Guides for Cybersecurity Awareness Month
October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month in the US, and two of this week’s TikTok weekly highlights are practical guides built from TikTok’s own Creator Academy. TikTok Account Security: 7 Steps to Protect Your Account walks through contact details, alerts, passwords, passkeys, two-step verification, phishing and device checks.
The companion piece, TikTok Verification: How to Get the Blue Check, covers a related scam risk. TikTok says verification is “completely free” and that follower count alone does not decide it, so anyone selling a badge is not offering a real one.
Big News: Checkout, Live Shopping and a Halloween Guide
TikTok Buy Direct Gets a Name
The largest business item in the TikTok weekly highlights is TikTok’s October 5 announcement at Advertising Week New York. TikTok Buy Direct is an in-app checkout that lets users buy from a brand without leaving TikTok, and a Shopping Assistant answers product questions in a conversation. TikTok’s post gave no rollout date, region or fees for either. See TikTok Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant Explained.

Live Shopping, Explained
The same day, this site published a plain-language guide to how selling in a livestream works. TikTok told CNBC that live shopping sales more than doubled in the first half of 2026 compared with the first half of 2025, with sessions up more than 60%. Those are TikTok’s figures. See TikTok Live Shopping Explained.

Meta Bans Ads That Link to TikTok
On October 8, a Meta spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that Meta has banned ads by ByteDance, TikTok’s parent, on its platforms in the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam. The ban took effect immediately and also covers third-party advertisers whose campaigns link to TikTok. TikTok and ByteDance had not responded when Reuters reported it. Full breakdown: Meta Bans TikTok Ads.
Six Haunted Spots From Creators
On October 6, TikTok’s Newsroom published a Halloween travel guide built from six creators’ picks: Hocking Hills in Ohio, Newport in Oregon, the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan, New Orleans, Gloucester in Massachusetts and Bensenville in Illinois. It is a promotional roundup, so each pick is a creator’s opinion. The post gives no prices and no dates for most venues. Details: TikTok Halloween Travel Guide.

Trending This Week: Three TikTok Weekly Highlights From the For You Page
A Flop Book Comes Back
The Modelland revival is the culture story of the week. Tyra Banks announced on October 6 that her young adult fantasy novel Modelland, first published in 2011, is going back into print with a re-release on November 3 and preorders open. She credits online fans. Yahoo’s explainer says clips of a promotional song from the book spread on X and then reached TikTok in mid-2026. No public figure shows how big it was on TikTok, so no view counts are claimed. See Modelland TikTok Revival.
Boiled Zucchini
A whole zucchini boiled in salted water, dressed with olive oil and vinegar, is this week’s food trend. TODAY calls creator Dana Basta, @dana_anastasia_, “the apparent originator,” and she says it is a Greek family dish. The reaction is mixed: taste testers say it tastes fine and texture is the sticking point. Creator My Nguyen (@myhealthydish) tested 10, 15 and 25 minutes and suggests about 12. Full story: Boiled Zucchini TikTok Trend.
@myhealthydish I boiled whole zucchini for 10, 15 and 25 minutes. Drizzled olive oil, red wine vinegar added salt. It was really good, but I suggest a 12 minute boil for a little better texture and crisp. #boiledzucchini #zucchini

Four Famous Dogs
This site’s list of 4 Famous TikTok Dogs to Follow Right Now covers Tucker Budzyn (@tuckerbudzyn), Bunny (@whataboutbunny), Doug the Pug (@dougthepug) and Teddy (@aguyandagolden). Every video in it was posted in 2026, and the list claims no view counts.
Creator Tools: Three TikTok Weekly Highlights for Making Videos

Three practical guides rounded out the week, all based on TikTok’s own Creator Academy as read on the dates in each article, and all labeled as snapshots because TikTok changes these tools often.
- TikTok Video Ideas: four tools inside TikTok Studio and search that show what is popular, what works for creators like you, what people search for without good answers and how crowded a topic is.
- TikTok Templates: how to find templates, how to make your own and what the in-app editor does. TikTok says creating new templates is not yet available to all users.
- TikTok Music Copyright: the Unlimited Sounds Library, the “Music copyright check” before posting and what to do if a video is muted. Business accounts use a different library.
Video of the Week: TikTok Weekly Highlights Pick
The video pick is from the dogs list: Tucker Budzyn’s March 2026 post, captioned “Had a son…got a best friend,” in which two golden retrievers curl up together under the text “Get your dog a dog.” It is the gentlest thing on the app this week and needs no explanation.
