TikTok news this week (September 1 through 6, 2026) was dense: a renewed NFL deal, a return to the Toronto International Film Festival, four new comment tools, and a data-scraping story that raised real questions about platform security.

The week opened with two carryover stories still generating real traffic: Katy Perry’s decade-old “The One That Got Away” being named Global Song of the Summer 2026, and The Pitt’s 25 Emmy nominations, both covered here on September 1.

Underneath the platform news, the FYP kept doing what it always does, turning a decade-old dance trend’s little cousin and a chamoy-covered pickle into the actual culture of the week. This roundup of TikTok news this week also digs into one story other coverage got wrong, and holds one deliberately back for its own full piece.

The most consequential item in TikTok news this week wasn’t a trend, it was a dataset. A Hugging Face user going by kuben-developer published a 4.5-billion-video dataset scraped from TikTok’s private Android API over roughly three weeks.

This site’s own research into TikTok news this week found the same account also runs a commercial site selling that exact scraping method for $699 to $1,899.

No usernames, no video files were in the dataset, so this wasn’t a personal-data breach in the way that phrase usually gets used. But the dataset’s own card admitted the collection violated TikTok’s Terms of Service.

It also stated that caption text at that scale still counts as personal data under GDPR and CCPA, regardless of it being public. TikTok’s own privacy center post on combating scraping states it can’t disclose all its detection measures, “to avoid revealing our tactics.”

Source code for the scraping method sells for $699, a full done-for-you setup for $1,899, plus $150 to $950 a month in required proxy fees to actually run it at scale. A live Hacker News discussion thread picked up on the same pattern, publish something large for free, sell the tool that made it possible right next to it.

At least one commenter called parts of the technical writeup behind it likely “AI coded and hallucinated,” one of the stranger footnotes in TikTok news this week.

Whether any of it is actually illegal is a separate, genuinely unsettled question. The dataset’s own card admits the Terms of Service violation outright.

But the Ninth Circuit’s ruling in hiQ Labs v. LinkedIn found that scraping publicly viewable data isn’t automatically a violation of the U.S. Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, a precedent that’s never been tested against a private, signed mobile API like this one. Big News

Three real platform moves round out the biggest TikTok news this week, beyond the data-scrape story:

TikTok renewed its NFL partnership on September 2, expanding TikTok GamePlan hubs, Pulse Premiere ad inventory to every NFL club, and a new Pro Events fan hub. NFL-related posts on TikTok are up 32% year over year.

This is one of the more predictable stories in TikTok news this week, at least the fourth chapter of a relationship that started in 2019, and it lands with none of the “will TikTok even survive in the US” uncertainty that shadowed the 2024 expansion, since the ownership fight resolved earlier this year. TikTok’s own release pointed directly to the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl reaction moment as the kind of content driving that growth.

TikTok is heading back to TIFF. On September 4, TikTok announced it’s Official Platform Partner and Special Presentations presenting partner for the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (Sept 10-20), bringing 30+ #FilmTok creators, its largest cohort there yet.

It’s the biggest entertainment-industry item in TikTok news this week: TikTok’s first TIFF sponsorship since a Canadian national-security review forced a 2025 suspension, resolved by a March 2026 settlement with Ottawa that reportedly included enhanced data-security commitments and an independent third-party monitor.

Three creators, Tope Babalola, Daniel Baptista, and Azia Celestino, will co-host post-screening Q&As for specific Special Presentations films. TikTok’s own numbers behind the push: more than 12 million Film & TV posts published globally every day over the past year, with 35% of TikTok users saying the platform influences what they actually go watch.

Comments got a real upgrade. On September 3, TikTok rolled out four new tools: Voice Comments (up to 60 seconds of audio, restricted to accounts 18 and older), Comment Polls (creators only, up to 5 options, on their own videos), Photo Carousel comments (up to 9 photos in one comment), and Live Photo comments (a brief motion-burst upload from the camera roll).

It’s the platform’s biggest comment-section change since 2020’s video replies, a real headline in its own right within TikTok news this week. TikTok sees 1.7 billion comments a day, and this site’s own comparison found TikTok’s Voice Comments are open to any eligible viewer, while YouTube’s equivalent feature stays creator-only.

To close out the week, this site also published a real fact-check on how TikTok’s recommendation system actually works. TikTok’s own documentation confirms captions, sounds, and hashtags shape what gets recommended.

It also explicitly states that neither follower count nor a creator’s past high-performing videos are direct ranking factors. Widely-repeated claims like a “critical first 60 minutes” engagement window, by contrast, don’t appear in any TikTok document, they’re marketing-blog inference being passed around as fact. The trending side of TikTok news this week starts with fashion, which split two ways: a tidy, Americana-coded bandana-and-paisley western revival against a deliberately messy “indie sleaze” boho-grunge comeback, both read as a rejection of the clean-girl minimalism that’s dominated the app.

Romy Mars, cited by press as one of the real-world faces of the indie sleaze shift, was one of the more visible fashion moments in TikTok news this week, showing up mid-week at Chanel’s haute couture show in exactly the kind of eclectic, maximalist styling driving the trend.

The color story tying both camps together: burnt olive, brick red, and chocolate brown pushing out the soft neutral palette that defined the clean-girl era, per Pantone’s own Fashion Color Trend Report for New York Fashion Week Fall 2026.

The single biggest music story in TikTok news this week: Ariana Grande’s Petal closer “nowhere, nobody” spawned something rarer than a dance trend, a synced photo-carousel format, with individual posts already clearing 4 million views.

The chorus itself, “there’s nowhere with nobody else that I’d rather be,” is doing a lot of the emotional work driving the format. It’s a rare Ariana Grande song about choosing to stay rather than running.

FoodTok was the single busiest category in TikTok news this week: Dubai chocolate strawberry cups, the Magnum croissant hack, a 2-ingredient yogurt “cheesecake,” a chamoy-loaded pickle roll-up, and the banana bread latte that got Dunkin’s attention.

The croissant hack alone (a whole Magnum ice cream bar stuffed inside a warm croissant, replacing the wooden stick) has been going around since summer and shows no sign of slowing down. The yogurt “cheesecake” needs just two ingredients to actually work.

The banana bread latte (mashed banana, brown sugar, water, vanilla, and cinnamon warmed into a syrup) got enough traction that Dunkin’ built its own banana-flavored Cloud Latte around the same idea.

Video of the Week

The Video of the Week pick in this roundup of TikTok news this week is simple: the single biggest number belongs to a strawberry.

Tini (@tinekeyounger) posted the breakout Dubai chocolate strawberry cup video that’s since pulled more than 11 million views on its own, well before the format landed on Crumbl’s actual menu. It’s the clearest example this week of a TikTok recipe outrunning the platform entirely and becoming a real commercial product.

Creator Spotlight

This week’s Creator Spotlight goes to Bussin Snacks (@bussinsnacks), the real business built directly out of a TikTok trend.

Once the chamoy-loaded pickle fruit roll-up took off, originally popularized by other creators over a year earlier, Bussin Snacks turned the format into an actual product, selling ready-made chamoy-pickle kits rather than just posting a recipe video and moving on.

It’s a small, concrete example of the creator-economy pipeline that shows up constantly in TikTok news this week and every week: a trend doesn’t just get views, it gets a storefront.

The pickle roll-up’s timeline is also a useful reminder of how these things actually spread. The original viral video was years old by the time this week’s version broke through again, which is exactly why 5 Viral TikTok Food Trends led that entry with the newer, still-active post rather than the original clip.

Quick Hits

  • Country singer Luke Bryan previewed a new single, “Down Goes the Whiskey,” and TikTok’s comment sections did not go easy on him. The top reply reads “Fart Goes the Butt” and has cleared 50,000 likes, with a second widely-liked comment reading simply “he’s listing things again,” a nod to Bryan’s rhyming, list-heavy songwriting style. The backlash traces back to a months-long TikTok trend built around a fake parody Bryan song, and this new single’s genuine resemblance to a children’s nursery rhyme has fueled a wave of “this sounds AI-written” comments. It’s a strong enough story with a real enough backstory to get its own full treatment on this site, watch for a dedicated piece soon rather than the short version here.
  • Rounding out TikTok news this week: the 78th Primetime Creative Arts Emmys ran September 5-6 in Los Angeles. “The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny” led Saturday’s unscripted night with seven wins; “The Traitors” won six, including Alan Cumming’s third straight win for Outstanding Host. Worth watching for TikTok crossover heading into the main Primetime Emmys on September 14, where The Pitt’s 25 nominations (this site’s coverage from September 1) will actually be decided.

What to Watch Next Week

Next week’s edition of TikTok news this week should include Apple’s folding iPhone Ultra and the NFL season opener, both landing September 9, real unboxing-and-reaction bait for creators and a natural second wind for this week’s NFL partnership news.

New York Fashion Week runs through September 15, likely to feed directly into the fall fashion trends already covered this week, expect the bandana-versus-indie-sleaze split to either sharpen or blur once runway shows actually start.

TIFF itself runs September 10-20, meaning next week is when TikTok’s 30+ #FilmTok creators actually start posting from Toronto rather than just being announced, real red carpet and post-screening content should start landing within days.

And the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards air September 14, with Mariska Hargitay as the first woman to host in fifteen years, and with real stakes for The Pitt’s 25 nominations from earlier this month.
