TikTok Live Shopping Explained: How It Works in 2026
TikTok live shopping is a livestream where a seller shows products, answers questions and sells them to viewers in real time, inside the TikTok app. It is the newest version of a very old idea, the shopping channel, rebuilt for a phone. And by TikTok’s own numbers, it is growing quickly.
CNBC reported on September 1 that TikTok told it live shopping sales on the platform more than doubled in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. This guide explains how TikTok live shopping works, who is doing it, what it earns for the sellers in CNBC’s reporting, and where it gets hard.
What to know:
- What it is: live video selling inside TikTok Shop, where hosts demo products, run offers and take orders as viewers watch.
- The growth: TikTok says live shopping sales more than doubled in the first half of 2026 versus the first half of 2025, with sessions up more than 60% and total live hours up more than 80%.
- The market: eMarketer forecasts US live shopping at nearly $20 billion in 2026, about 35% higher than a year earlier, according to CNBC.
- The catch: competition for attention is intense, and the platforms charge fees.

What TikTok Live Shopping Is
CNBC describes the format as “reminiscent of the QVC craze of the past few decades”: live shopping “puts consumers in front of hosts who sell products in real time.” On TikTok, that happens through TikTok Shop, which launched in 2023.
A seller or creator goes live, shows the product, talks about it and points viewers to buy. It can be a brand selling its own products or an affiliate creator selling someone else’s. In January, TikTok also rolled out live auctions, according to CNBC, which adds bidding to the format.

How TikTok Live Shopping Works
The clearest picture of TikTok live shopping in action comes from CNBC’s visit to a livestream by Beachwaver, the hair-curling iron brand. CEO Sarah Potempa, a celebrity hairstylist, hosts shows from the company’s warehouse in Gurnee, Illinois, for hours at a time.
In the late July show CNBC sat in on, Beachwaver did about $8,000 in sales in the first four hours. Potempa auctioned limited-edition curling irons, demonstrated hair care products and promised to shave her brother-in-law’s head on camera if viewers placed 500 orders. It was one of hundreds of shows the company does each year.
The business result: about a quarter of Beachwaver’s $1 million in TikTok Shop sales so far in 2026 came from livestreams, CNBC reports, split between the company’s own shows and affiliate creators who sell its products. Here is a Potempa show announcement on TikTok.

Potempa explained how live differs from the TV format she started in, QVC, where Beachwaver began: “Nobody is saying, OK, you have 10 minutes at 7 p.m. and get ready and here’s your 10 minutes and you’re done.” On a digital platform, she said, “you definitely need to be on longer,” but “you really are more in control of the revenue.”
The Numbers Behind TikTok Live Shopping
TikTok shared three numbers with CNBC that describe the first half of 2026 against the first half of 2025. They are TikTok’s figures, not independently audited.
- Live shopping sales: more than doubled.
- Live shopping sessions: up more than 60%.
- Total live hours: up more than 80%.
The larger market numbers come from eMarketer, as cited by CNBC. The US live shopping industry is forecast at nearly $20 billion in sales in 2026, about 35% higher year over year and more than double 2024. China is far ahead: eMarketer projects its live shopping market to top $1.1 trillion in 2026.
GlobalData’s Neil Saunders told CNBC why the US trails: “In the U.S., we’ve tended to rely traditionally more on stores” for the entertainment and engagement that Chinese shoppers get from livestreams, and he said younger consumers are shifting toward live commerce for discovery.
Who Is Selling on TikTok Live
QVC
The original shopping channel is now one of the biggest live sellers on the app. CNBC reports QVC is live on TikTok for more than 200 hours a week across seven channels, according to the company. QVC’s own TikTok post, below, calls its nonstop streams “the FIRST 24/7 live shopping experience on TikTok Shop in the U.S.”

Patrick Nommensen, TikTok Shop’s president of strategic initiatives for the Americas, told CNBC: “QVC is a great example of a large established retailer that might have been seen as a competitor to TikTok shop … but in fact they have turned out to be a really successful merchant.”
Independent sellers and brands
Eric Pagan, who sells for brands on both TikTok and Whatnot, told CNBC an audience of 5,000 to 10,000 people can watch a show at once, and that “I did a show on TikTok this weekend that was well into six figures.” He added that trust is the foundation: without it, “there is no point in even being live.”
The retail wave on TikTok Shop is a related story. This site has covered Best Buy’s TikTok Shop storefront and Boots’ pilot in the UK, both of which pair a catalog with a launch-day live event.
The Catches
TikTok live shopping has real costs and limits, and the CNBC story is clear about them.
Visibility
For TikTok live shopping, Saunders called visibility “the biggest challenge really,” saying a seller has to make sure the feed “is aligned with the algorithm” so it reaches the right people. As more sellers go live, standing out gets harder.
Fees
TikTok live shopping sellers pay for the platform they use. Selling on a large platform costs money. CNBC notes that Whatnot, a rival live shopping platform, takes a commission of 4% to 8% depending on the product, plus payment processing fees. Check TikTok Shop’s current seller fees directly before planning a business around it.
Trust
Circana retail analyst Marshal Cohen told CNBC live shopping helps close online shopping’s biggest gap: “You can’t touch and feel the product, but you can hear from others what they think about it.” That only works if the host is credible, which is Pagan’s point about trust.
What TikTok Announced This Week
On October 5, TikTok announced new shopping tools at Advertising Week New York, including Buy Direct, a one-click in-app checkout, and a conversational Shopping Assistant. TikTok’s post does not mention live shopping specifically. Those tools target the feed and the chat, not the livestream.
It did expand GMV Max, TikTok Shop’s automation tool for sellers, which now factors in affiliate commissions, coupons and referral fees when optimizing for profit. For anyone selling through TikTok live shopping or watching it, the practical point is that TikTok is building more ways to buy inside the app, with live selling as one of them. The full details, including what TikTok has not said, are in this site’s TikTok Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant explainer.
